Topic: Arc Flash Awareness for Safety Generalists
Presentation: This technical meeting introduces safety professionals to the fundamentals of arc flash hazards in the workplace. Designed for non-electrical experts, the presentation demystifies arc flash risks, regulatory requirements, and practical steps to enhance safety. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of what arc flash is, why it matters, and how to support safe work practices in environments where electrical hazards may be present.
Learning Objectives:
- Define arc flash and arc blast and understand the difference between the two phenomena.
 - Recognize common causes of arc flash incidents and identify high-risk tasks and environments.
 - Understand key OSHA regulations and guidance related to electrical safety and the role of NFPA 70E
 - Identify essential components of an arc flash risk assessment, including incident energy analysis and labeling.
 
Presenter: Mary A. McCoy, PE, has over 20 years of environmental, health and safety experience in consulting, manufacturing and production. She is a Senior Environmental Engineer at C.T. Male Associates in Latham, New York with a B.S. in Environmental Engineering from Montana Tech in Butte, Montana. Industries in which she’s worked include organic chemical, energetic materials, and vanadium production and aerospace parts manufacturing.
